Broken Plate
If you drop a plate one time it will break into a few pieces. Most likely, you can glue the pieces back together. If you drop it a second time, there will be more broken pieces and most likely the pieces themselves will be chipped. If the same plate breaks for a third time, it will be harder to put it back together and some pieces will be missing – GONE FOREVER.
Mental health and addiction follow the same pattern. If you have an episode of depression, debilitating anxiety, addiction, or any emotional crisis, it’s important to get the help you need. Once you feel more stable (the pieces have been glued together) it is of utmost importance for you to continue to HANDLE YOURSELF WITH CARE.
Just as a plate is fragile, so are we as human beings. Recklessness and lack of self- care and attention will result in another broken episode. BUT this time YOU will be broken. People who relapse emotionally or on drugs and alcohol have found that the trajectory of their “illness” is PROGRESSIVE. Each relapse increases the intensity of the underlying problem. Each relapse results in a problem that becomes worse and worse with time.
Sadly, the ultimate progression of all disease is death. If you break for the last time, you will be irreparable -- GONE FOREVER.
Don’t let that happen. Ask for help. You don’t have to do this alone.
